The Viveka Foundation, A Centre for Alternative Perspectives, established in 2001, is a civil society
organisation based in New Delhi, India. It is affiliated to the global justice movement, and is
committed to publishing with a difference. "Viveka" means "discernment" and the finer tune of
thought and experience that leads to "wisdom" which is different from information and knowledge.
Viveka Books are a product of our belief that true "alternative" publishing is based on intent and
content rather than size or scale.

The Viveka Foundation creates linkages between every idea and practice. Its publications are multi,
inter and intra-disciplinary and all its projects are linked by the same common thread of social and
human commitment.

The Viveka Foundation's vision is that alternative publishing is an important counter balance in a
democratic society and which acts as a watchdog on issues of freedom of expression, social justice,
equity and the state of the environment. It upholds democratic values, pluralistic traditions, gender
equality and cultural, ecological and spiritual heritage. It opposes all forms of political,
developmental, economic, linguistic and ethnic hegemony.

Viveka sees itself as a "publisher-activist" group, placing as much importance in publishing as
in reaching out innovatively to create pressure points of change.
